RED DOOR  cordially invites you to the first solo exhibition of 2025 at its Copenhagen location, featuring the work of Dylan Cawthorne.

Cyborg plants (and other technologies for non-humans) opens on February 22nd with a reception from 18 to 22.30
The exhibition will be on view during regular hours until March 28th, where we will host a closing event.

This is a free event — Bring your friends — Help us spread the word.

The technological world is designed for the benefit of one species – humans.  In this exhibition, robotic and other technologies are instead developed for non-human stakeholders – plants.  In 1985, Donna Haraway wrote A Cyborg Manifesto which suggested potential benefits of humans merging with technology – that it could allow us to enhance ourselves, and in so doing become more human.  Haraway’s concept is now applied to non-humans, fusing the technological with the biological to enhance the capabilities of these organic entities.  This exhibition aims to raise philosophical and ethical questions about our relationship with nature, the moral status of non-humans, and the risks that come with technological enhancement.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
When I work, my focus is on making the artwork “exist in itself.” If one is completely present in the process—forgetting all about composition and what is possible on a surface—there are moments when the work seems to transcend ordinary rules and take on a life of its own. This approach has radically transformed my expression—from controlled cubism to a far more expressive style, where I work very quickly without focusing too much on the result. The challenge is to resist ambition, to avoid falling in love with a particular part of the work, and to constantly dare to “kill your darlings.” This way, I stay true to an authentic expression, and the artworks become alive and real. When I succeed in achieving this quality, I call it making the artwork “fly”—hence the title of this exhibition.
My works often consist of many layers and a variety of materials, including acrylics, colored pencils, tape, cut-outs, and a variety of collage elements.
I have exhibited widely across Denmark but moved with my partner Line to eastern Germany in 2021, where we now live in a small town not far from Leipzig.
