Step 1: On the art of giving back…
Dear worldthreaders,
December is here. December is here. It must be the catholic upbringing or the Latin American heritage, but once this month arrives I’m already packing up whatever was left behind for the year and dreaming myself away into new objectives. Not resolutions per se, but tangible possibilities that reflect what I’ve been up to. Which sometimes feels like a lot, and sometimes, honestly, feels like never enough, based on the amount of creative projects I’d like to embark on… or the expectations I have set, for the projects I am involved in.
Often times, this means accepting the reality of economic challenges faced by independent artists. As you know, I’ve built a whole lifestyle of believing fully in the Do-It-Together mentality, (with a neverstop attitude) without government support or private funding, let alone advertising, for projects like the Poetic Phonotheque or Red Door (and for my career as a writer and multimedia artist), simply because I never want things to get muddied by other interests than those of poetic intention, community manifestation, and making room for what really needs to be said.
That which really needs to be said right now, is that Red Door (both the gallery and the magazine) has existed for over a decade as a grassroots, independent platform and space for local and international creators, through my own poetic sponsorship of it. Because I believe in giving back. I believe that spaces like Red Door are necessary for our community, and I honor the work of cultural organizers and bookshop owners all around the world, struggling against the rising cost of living to keep holding these doors open.
I’d love to be the type of artist who can continue giving largely and generously, but there are current limitations that jeopardize the continuation of the project. Now, more than ever, your support is needed to keep going. Step 1 is accepting this, and doing something about it. But how to tackle that in the beginning of December?
Step 1 is Gift Cards. Because, the theme this month, is giving.
Want to give gifts that are sustainable, local, artistic, and that show that you care?
I’ve created a selection of options you’ll enjoy giving to those you love. With our gift cards, you can share a year-long subscription to Red Door Magazine, a personal poetic consultation complete with a custom, typewritten poem, or give flexible store credit to explore our curated publications, prints, and original artworks.
Every gift card helps sustain our increasing expenses, our programming, how we support emerging artists, our magazine… and it will make a tangible difference in keeping our vital, independent cultural space thriving.
This is how your gift becomes more than a present: it’s an investment in art, ideas, and community. Thank you for your continued trust and support.
Visit:

If you are in Copenhagen, come by Red Door this Friday for a glass of Gløgg and check out issue 40 of Red Door, the current exhibition, and good talks about what I hope to be able to make happen in the coming year.
With love, and neverstopping desire,
Madam Neverstop.
