Help keep RED DOOR open

Since 2009, Red Door has existed as an independent cultural platform dedicated to artistic experimentation, critical publishing, and public access to culture. What began as a magazine has grown into a hybrid infrastructure: a printed and digital publication, a physical gallery space in Copenhagen, and a continuous program of exhibitions, performances, workshops, and festivals that operate outside commercial logic. Over the past 16 years, Red Door has hosted and published artists, writers, filmmakers, musicians, and performance practitioners from across the world. It has functioned as a meeting point between local and international communities, sustained largely through voluntary labor, modest fees, love for culture and community, and a shared belief in cultural independence and free expression.

Today, this model is under increasing pressure.

Rising rents and utilities, higher costs for digital infrastructure, and broader economic instability have made it increasingly difficult to maintain a physical space and free public programming. At the same time, tariffs and shipping barriers have disrupted international distribution of printed publications, particularly to the United States, further reducing already modest income streams. Like many small, independent cultural initiatives, Red Door operates without long-term structural funding and absorbs costs that are rarely visible to audiences. But now, the short-term streams have also disappeared.

For this reason, we are launching a public fundraiser to secure one year of basic stability, while we change our model to become a union/non-profit to keep our door and projects to the service of our communities.

The goal of the campaign is 250,000 DKK, covering the minimum costs required to keep Red Door open and active for twelve months.

180,000 DKK will cover physical infrastructure: rent, utilities, essential software platforms, insurance, and domain costs. These expenses are fixed and unavoidable. Without them, the space cannot function and the magazine cannot continue as an editorial and archival platform.

65,000 DKK will support free, non-profitable cultural programming. This includes a free poetry film festival, monthly art exhibitions and workshops, and monthly performances in music and scenekunst. These activities are offered without ticket income and generate no financial return. The budget allows only symbolic artist fees, basic materials, and minimal technical support, relying heavily on solidarity and unpaid organizational labor.

5,000 DKK is allocated to GoFundMe platform and transaction fees, ensuring transparency about the real cost of fundraising itself.

There are other ways you can give your support, like signing up for our new PATREON, donating via mobilepay, or visiting our webshop to acquire books, magazines and art. This is not an expansion budget, nor a growth strategy. No salaries or publications are covered here. It is a continuity budget so we can keep our doors open in 2026. It reflects the minimum required to maintain a physical cultural space and offer free public programming for one year, at a level far below institutional standards.

Independent spaces like Red Door play a specific role in cultural ecosystems. They provide room for artistic risk, interdisciplinary work, and critical voices that do not easily fit commercial or institutional frameworks. Yet they are increasingly threatened by the same structural forces affecting housing, labor, and public space more broadly.

Contributing to this fundraiser means supporting shared cultural infrastructure rather than private ownership or profit. It means acknowledging that free culture has material costs, and that creative independence depends on collective responsibility.

Any support—financial or by sharing the campaign—helps sustain Red Door as a space for independent culture, experimentation, and public access at a time when such spaces are rapidly disappearing.

Thank you for helping keep RED DOOR open.
